Caster vs Castor: Is There Actually a Mechanical Difference?

Search "caster vs castor" and you'll find two competing answers. Some sites will tell you it's just a spelling variation. Others will tell you a castor is the wheel component and a caster is the full assembly - bracket, bearing, mounting plate and all.
Only one of those is correct.
Caster and castor are the same part. The difference is regional spelling, not mechanical design. "Castor" is standard in New Zealand, Australia, and the UK. "Caster" is the American English spelling. Either way, you're talking about the same wheel-and-bracket assembly that lets equipment roll.
Where the "different parts" myth comes from
A handful of overseas blogs and marketplace listings draw a line between "castor" (the wheel only) and "caster" (the wheel plus mounting hardware). It's a tidy explanation, but it doesn't hold up against how the terms are actually used across manufacturers, catalogues, and engineering standards. In practice, both spellings refer to the complete assembly: a wheel, a fork (or yoke), a bearing, and a top plate, bolt-hole plate, or stem for mounting.
If you strip the wheel out of that assembly on its own — no bracket, no swivel, no mounting plate — that's not a "castor" either. That's just a wheel. Which raises the question we get almost as often: what's actually the difference between a castor and a wheel? So what genuinely differs between castors?
If spelling isn't the meaningful distinction, here's what is — the variables that actually change how a castor performs:
Rotation type. Swivel castors turn 360°. Fixed castors only roll forward and back. This is the single biggest functional difference between any two castors, regardless of what you call them.
Mounting method. Top plate, bolt-hole plate, or threaded/grip-ring stem. Get this wrong and the castor won't physically fit your equipment, no matter how well-specified it is otherwise.
Wheel material. Rubber, polyurethane, nylon, cast iron, or stainless steel hub — this determines load capacity, floor protection, noise level, and how the castor holds up in wet or corrosive environments.
Load rating. Stamped per castor, not per set. A 100kg-rated castor holds 100kg — divide your total load by the number of castors, then add a safety margin, to work out what you actually need.
Bearing type. Plain bore, ball bearing, or roller bearing — this affects how much force it takes to get the load rolling, especially under heavier weights.
None of these depend on whether you spell it "caster" or "castor." A New Zealand supplier and a US supplier selling the identical part will just use different spelling on the box.
Pro tip: If you're specifying castors for equipment that will be shipped or serviced internationally, note both spellings on your documentation. It avoids confusion when a part number search comes up empty because someone searched "caster" and your paperwork says "castor" — or the other way around.
Why this matters when you're buying
The practical risk isn't spelling - it's assuming a "caster" from an overseas catalogue is a different product to a "castor" from a local one, when it's the same component with different regional naming. What actually needs checking every time is rotation type, mounting method, material, and load rating. Get those four right and the spelling on the datasheet is irrelevant.
